Volunteers

Volunteers have a vital role to play in sport in this country, the contribution made by volunteers to sport each year is estimated to be worth around £1.5 billion. Central Government has now recognised the need to help sport develop its volunteers from grass roots to national level. Here at Sport Cheshire we believe that being a volunteer in sport or leisure is a valuable and positive experience.

What do sports volunteers do?

Most sports volunteers rarely use the term 'volunteer' to describe their activities, they see themselves as coaches, umpires, referees, team managers, club personnel or event organisers. Behind the scenes there are treasurers, committee members, planners, researchers, IT website managers, journalists and photographers. In short, there is a vast array of roles supporting and surrounding sport without which sport would not be able to function.

The Cheshire & Warrington sports volunteering programme incorporates the Step into Sport programme for young people aged between 16-19yrs and involves sport volunteering within the community.

Young people can become engaged in sport volunteering through their school from the age of 14yrs. Upon reaching the age of 16yrs they can become involved in "community" volunteering. Registration is via an online PASSPORT system and enables the volunteer to keep their records up to date and log all their volunteering hours.
