Badminton

Badminton is one of the most popular raquet sports in the world, and approximately 2 million people play in the UK on a regular basis. Badminton is a racket sport played by either two opposing players (singles) or two opposing pairs (doubles). Players or pairs take positions on opposite halves of a rectangular court that is divided by a net. Unlike many racket sports, badminton does not use a ball: Badminton uses a feathered projectile known as a shuttlecock.

The sport can be played on a proper court, the back garden or even in one of Cheshires parks.  An excellent sport for people looking to develop their fitness levels & stamina, whilst also developing key skills in agility, balance, & hand eye coordination it is also an ideal sport for people who are just getting back into sport. Most local leisure centres have courts available for hire for casual play (and some facilities may also offer coaching to assist with developing your game). From young to old, all abilities can participate, you can reach success quickly and it is accessible to everyone.

There are a number of clubs across Cheshire & Warrington ranging from small social clubs to more organised clubs with junior and adult sections.

Center Parcs National Schools Championships

The aim of the Center Parcs National Schools Championships is to create a ‘best in class’ tournament that provides a high-level competitive badminton opportunity for schools across England.Last years Championships saw a record entry of over 1,000 schools and 15,000 children; the 2009/10 tournament has smashed that record with the number of schools entering topping 1,400 and over 19,000 children taking part.

The Cheshire round of the Championships saw 36 teams, from 16 different schools competing across the two age groups last week. Sandbach Girls School and Rudheath High School kindly hosted the two events which provided an excellent opportunity for pupils to play competitive badminton against opposition from schools across the County.

The under 14 boy’s teams to make the semi finals were Weaverham, Malbank, Congleton and Poynton.  With Weaverham and Congleton both producing convincing wins they went on to face each other in the final. Both teams won two games so it was all down to the final doubles match, that Congleton went on to win 15 points to 5.

The under 14 girl’s semi finals saw Wilmslow play Congleton, while Brine Leas faced Rudheath. Convincing wins by Wilmslow and Brine Leas meant they progressed to face each other in the final. Similarly to the boys, the last doubles match was to decide the winner, sadly one of the Wilmslow players suffered an injury and could not continue, meaning they had to forfeit the game making Brine Leas the winners.

The under16’s competition saw Weaverham face Christleton, while Middlewich faced Ellesmere Port Catholic High in the semi final stage. With strong performances from Weaverham and Middlewich they went on to play each other in the final. Weaverham continued their winning run and won the match 4 games to 1.

The girl’s semi finals saw group winners Queens play against Ellesmere Port Catholic High and Weaverham play group B winners Congleton. With Queens and Congleton winning their matches 5 games to nil they went on to battle against each other for the championship. A determined performance from the Queens team provided them with a 4:1 victory over their opponents, making them U16 girls Champions.

All four group winners will now go on to represent Cheshire in the Regional round of the competition on the 1st March at Leigh Sports Village in Wigan We wish them all the best of luck.
