Success for Special Olympics in Crewe

Scores of learning disabled athletes from across the country came to Crewe Last weekend for the Special Olympics Great Britain (SOGB) National Table Tennis Competition.

Coppnehall Leisure Centre, in Coronation Street, hosted the two-day tournament which saw nearly 100 athletes competing for 50 gold, silver and bronze medals. Ten athletes also used the 350-game competition as a warm-up before representing Great Britain in Austria and Spain.

National Grid, SOGB’s official partner, provided manpower for the event drawn from a dedicated 80-strong employee volunteer taskforce.

Coppenhall Leisure Centre is also home to South Cheshire Special Needs Table Tennis Club and the North & West Cheshire Special Olympics Group. The club runs two national competitions from the venue each year.

Special Olympics is a community-driven programme of local clubs and events open to anyone who has a learning disability.
