Cheshire and 2008 Warrington Partnership Youth Games

2008 Cheshire & Warrington Partnership Youth Games and the showers didn't dampen spirits....

On Saturday 11th October 2008, after a three year break, we saw the Youth Games back in the Borough of Macclesfield.

Approximately 750 young people from across Cheshire & Warrington attended to take part in competition and taster sports.

The day offered a unique platform for young people to get involved and engage in sport. This year saw the Sports Partnership offering a variety of taster sports to try including Archery, Judo, Urban Sports, Futsal, Handball, Rowing, Paddlesport, Racketball and Table Tennis.

The 4 Competition Sports that took place were Badminton, Basketball, Cheerleading and Rugby *WINNERS/ and it was the Borough of Warrington who took the lion’s share of trophies walking away with 5 out of a possible 14 awarded, and Crewe and Nantwich winning the overall Fairplay.

The event is not just a great day for the competitors, it was a valuable opportunity for volunteers to share their experience and give something back to the world of sport. The dedication of the 150+ Volunteers contributed to the day’s success.

Canalside Community Radio Station and Silk FM provided on site entertainment throughout the day, other entertainment included a climbing wall, a soccercage, Wii Skipping, OSCAR, and not to mention Neil Danns, Sporting Champion in Extreme Sports showing the Mascots how to skate board!

Additional financial help came from our listed sponsors: Big Lottery Fund - Awards for All, Mid Cheshire College, MacclesfieldCollege, Western Cheshire PCT, Central and Eastern Cheshire PCT, Cheshire County Council and Cheshire Children’s Trust.

QUOTES

John Ascroft, England Badminton said “I thought the overall event was organised excellently by C & W CSP and in the badminton tournament I was impressed by the player’s attitude, their conduct and competitiveness. Even though teams were losing they never lost heart and continued to give their best. I am looking forward to the next one and it was encouraging from a NGB point of view that so many children took part in the badminton activity.

David Newton Chairman Sport Cheshire “ The Youth Games were a great success, and a wonderful showcase for sport. The great thing is that they provided an opportunity for young people to find out what sports they might like and what suits their talents. It also gave them the opportunity to compete together and hone their skills. We are particularly grateful to all those who took part, young people, coaches, and volunteers, and partners, and to all our sponsors who helped to make the whole thing possible".

Niall McGregor Crewe & Nantwich Sports Development “T hanks to the Sport Cheshire team on behalf of the partnership for co-ordinating the youth games at the weekend, know its been difficult due to review etc but as a team we feel that it was a more inclusive games which is what we all set out to achieve”

Clive Jones, Warrington Sports Development “The Feed back from our squad has been excellent, everyone enjoyed the day including the young people, volunteers, managers and VIP's”
