Press release from the Celtic Warriors Wheelchair Basketball Club about two players being selected for the Paralympic World Cup in Manchester in May 2008.

Selection Joy for two of the Celtic Warriors

 

Two Celtic Warriors Wheelchair Basketball Club members are going to be competing at the Paralympic World Cup in Manchester in the first week in May.

 

Senior Player Anna Jackson is part of the 12 player GB Women's Wheelchair Basketball team who will face Brazil, China and the Netherlands at the Manchester Regional Arena from Weds 7th - Sat 10th May.  Anna has played Wheelchair Basketball since 1997 and is taking part in her 3rd Paralympic World Cup. She has already competed at three European Championships, two World Championships and the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games.  Originally from Ruthin, Denbighshire she now lives in Upton, Chester and works for Active8 Leisure Ltd at the EPIC Leisure Centre in Ellesmere Port. She currently trains at the EPIC and Total Fitness in Chester

 

Becca Chin aged 16 from Deganwy who has just started playing Wheelchair Basketball is competing as part of the GB Athletics Squad in the Discus event on Sunday May 11th at the Regional Arena.  Becca started playing Wheelchair Basketball in 2007 and is an excellent all round sportswoman.  She currently goes to school in Aberconwy.

 

Becca is competing in the F44 category - Last year she won the UK School Games in Coventry which was her first big competition - photo attached is of her with her medal with Kelly Holmes. 
 
Becca competes in Shot and Discus and as well as being involved in Disability Athletics she also competes against able bodied athletes for Deeside Athletics Club and is coached by John Parkin, she also competes for the North Wales U20 Team.   


She won the 2007 Sporting Champion of The Year Award by Trinity Mirror/ Scottish Power. Also the 2007 Conwy County Borough Sport Award-Most Improved Sports Person and she was a finalist for the Special Achievement Award.

 

The Paralympic World Cup is in its 4th year and is a showcase event for Disability Sport in the UK.

 

Both Warriors are excited at the prospect of competing in Manchester this year - whereas Becca is taking part in her first Paralympic World Cup having recently been given her UK Classification to compete in Disability Athletics.

 

Additionally 2008 is Paralympic year and both athletes are hoping for selection for Beijing Paralympic Games in September - Anna will find out on May 11th and Becca will find out later in the summer.
