The APS results. How well are we doing?

In June 2012 the latest results of the Sport England Active People Survey (version 6) were published. These results are for the period, April 2011 to April 2012.
A summary of the results is outlined below:
Cheshire West & Chester has seen an increase in adults taking part in moderate intensity sport and active recreation. The area has seen a 2.9% (71,347) increase in adults taking part 3 times a week for 30minutes or more. The area is 1 of 41 authorities (total 326) in England that has seen a statistical increase in participation.

In Warrington 64,575 (40.4%) adults took part in sport at least once per week for 30minutes, compared to 60,578 in 2005/06. Although this is a positive step change in participation levels, it is not a statistically significant change in participation levels.
In relation to the Active Warrington Strategy, this result places Warrington 2nd in the northwest (6th in 2009/10), which is inline with the target of being the lost active local authority in the North West by 2016. If using the 3x 30minute indicator, Warrington are ranked 6th in the northwest (12th in 2009/10).
Cheshire East has seen a slight drop in participation levels of people taking part once a week for 30minutes. Currently 102,359 adults a active once per week.

6 sports (nationally) have seen a statistically significant increase in participation when compared to APS2:
• Athletics - an increase of 369,700 participants
• Cycling - an increase of 155,400 participants
• Boxing - an increase of 31,600 participants
• Table tennis - an increase of 31,000 participants
• Netball - an increase of 28,300 participants
• Fencing - an increase of 6,500 participants

In December 2011 the Sport England Active People Survey (version 5) were published. These results are for the period, October 2010 to October 2011.
A summary of the results is outlined below:
18.1% of adults (16+) are currently participating in moderate intensity sport in Cheshire and Warrington for at least 30 minutes, 3 times per week (this ranks C&W 5th out of 49 County Sports Partnership areas; 3rd in APS4 - 2009/10; 1st in APS3 - 2008/09; 4TH in APS2 - 2007/08)
There has been a significant increase in people volunteering once per week in Cheshire and Warrington from 5.77% in 2007/08 (APS2) to 7.62% in 2010/11 (APS5). This ranks C&W 23rd in the Country. *slight amend in how question phrased in APS5 - defined as 'Volunteering to support sport for at least one hour a week' compared to the percentage of the adult population who have volunteered in sport for at least one hour a week*
The 5 most participated in sport across Cheshire and Warrington during 2009/10 (APS4) were:
• Swimming - 13.71 (APS3 = 14.30%)
• Cycling - 10.22% (10.63%)
• Athletics - 7.51% (6.64%)
• Football - 7.21% (7.28%)
• Golf - 5.04% (5.02%)
• Golf - 5.02%
In comparison to the survey of 2007/08 (APS2), the Sport England funding sports that have seen a statistically significant increase in participation (once per week) across England are:
• Athletics
• Boxing
• table tennis
• mountaineering
Sports that have seen no significant change (increase or decrease) in participation are:
• Cycling
• Squash and racquetball
• Cricket
• Netball
• Canoeing
• Taekwondo
• Fencing
Club membership in gymnastics/trampolining and rowing across England has significantly increased since 2007/08
Four sports have seen a significant increase in adults receiving sports coaching and tuition since 2007/08, these being: rowing, swimming, gymnastics/trampolining and sailing
Adults taking part in organised competition over the last 12months has increased across England in the following sports: cricket, cycling, rowing, and swimming
