World Cup Inspires Women to join the beautiful Game

W orld Cup inspires women to join in the beautiful game

The FIFA Women’s World Cup this month is helping to inspire even more women and girls to get involved in football.

The FIFA Women’s World Cup is taking place in China until 30th September.

Whatever the result it is hoped the world cup will inspire even more young women to get involved in the beautiful game.

The Football Association’s ‘girls united’ campaign uses the World Cup to promote the sport to women and girls. The website www.TheFA.com/girlsunited contains everything you need to know about the England team and how to find and join your local club.

Stewart Kellett, Regional Director, Sport England North West: ‘Women and girls are getting involved in football in ever greater numbers. With the North West’s footballing heritage it is appropriate that the game should be strong here. Sport England offers support and funding to clubs setting up women’s and girls’ sections. And it’s great news that many local authorities in the North West are using the World Cup as a means of promoting the game further.’

Women’s football: Did you know?

  • Together Sport England, the county sport partnerships and the Women’s Sport Foundation are committed to promoting football as sport that can appeal to women and girls of all ages
  • 25,000 16 year olds drop out of sport each year – missing out on the health, social and other benefits it can offer
  • It’s also the case that just 7% of women over 30 in the UK take part in regular sport or physical activity. In Australia this number is 30%.
  • Fewer NW women than men take part in regular sport: among women 17.1% do sport or physical activity three times a week for 30 minutes a session or more compared to 24.4% of NW men*
  • More than half of us in the NW don’t do any sport at all ( 52.4%)**
  • Sport England North West and its partners are focuses on getting 250,000 more North West people into sport by 2012. Women’s football is a growing and exciting sport that can help the region reach this target.

·         Sport England NW is funding clubs and coaches in the region, and recently awarded an additional £
180K for women's football clubs and coaches in the NW (£1.3m was made available to clubs and coaches nationally) to encourage participation and build capacity in clubs
  • Sport England funds the ‘Sporting Champions’ scheme to enable community clubs and schools to receive visits and training sessions from champions including England football star Sue Smith.

The North West boasts several England squad members. Everton players in the England squad include: Jody Handley, Lindsay Johnson, Rachel Unitt and goalkeeper Rachel Brown.
